If you notice the health and appearance of your hair and scalp changing along with the introduction of the Fall and Winter seasons, it’s most likely due to the changing, more frigid temperature, and the decreased water vapor in the air. If you notice this happening, you may want to consider a seasonal upgrade to your hair care routine! Here are a few ideas to get you started on your seasonal Fall and Winter hair care upgrade!

Avoid Sulfates

As the weather turns colder, you should also avoid products that contain sulfates, as they tend to strip the hair and scalp of most of its moisture. Instead, look for sulfate-free alternatives that are rich in naturally absorbent oils, like argan, sweet almond, and jojoba oil.

The Melanin Haircare Signature Line is Completely Free of Sulfates!

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Colder months contain frigid weather and dry winds, which can lead to thirsty, brittle hair and breakage. To alleviate this, opt for a moisturizing shampoo to help reintroduce hydration right at the cleansing level. Follow that up with a rich conditioner and/or deep conditioner to moisturize both deeply into the hair strand, and reinforce your strands' outer barriers. There’s also no better time like the Fall and Winter to incorporate DIY deep conditioning treatments into your routine that use ingredients like avocado, honey, and greek yogurt, which are most-likely already stored in your kitchen pantry. If you’re not a fan of DIY, The Melanin Haircare Plumping Deep Conditioner is the best of both nature and science, featuring rich, moisturizing Pumpkin and Banana, and strengthening Bamboo, Hemp and Fenugreek, along with moisture-retaining Hyaluronic Acid, ProVitamin B5, Biotin, and Hydrolyzed Pea Proteins to strengthen and repair from the inside out. Try to apply a deep conditioner once a week, during the colder months, in order to keep your hair hydrated and prevent it from drying out.

Scalp Care

Don't forget your scalp. A healthy scalp is crucial for healthy hair growth. In the fall and winter, you may experience dryness, itchiness, or flaking, so consider using a naturally penetrating oil, like any one of the “moisturizing,” softening oils like sweet almond, jojoba, avocado, argan, and baobab. The Melanin Haircare Multi-Use Pure Oil Blend contains all of the previously mentioned moisturizing oils, with the addition of  tea tree, sage, vitamin E and geranium, beneficial in helping to reduce dandruff, inflammation and irritation, all in one beneficial, absorbing oil blend.

Protective Hairstyles

Opt for protective hairstyles like gently braided and twisted hairstyles, and loose, low buns to help shield your hair, and your aged hair ends, from the harsh wind, weather, and the grating fabric of your wool and cotton tops. These styles help minimize exposure to the elements and reduce breakage.

Use a Silk or Satin Pillowcase

Fall and winter is the perfect time to swap your cotton pillowcase for a silk or satin one, if you haven’t already! Pillowcases made from cotton materials can absorb and leech the moisture from your hair, leading to dryness and frizz. Because of this, satin and silk are much more gentle and smoothing for your hair, helping to prevent the moisture loss, and the unnecessary friction, frizz and breakage. If you find satin pillowcases to be uncomfortable, too slippery, or if they make you feel too hot, you can also opt for a satin bonnet or satin head wrap that you can wear on your head to help protect your hair instead. Many opt for one or the other, while others opt for both! Either way, you will awaken with softer, more moisturized hair when you choose satin or silk instead of cotton.

Cover Your Hair When Outdoors

When going outside in the extreme cold or windy conditions, consider wearing a hat, hood, or a large head wrap or scarf to protect your hair from the drying effects of the wind and cold air. The Melanin Haircare Stretch Satin Head Wraps and Textured Stretch Satin Head Wraps are extra long and wide, allowing you to cover all of your hair, no matter how long, with a super soft, sleek, stretchy satin material that stays put without slipping off! They even come in different colors and patterns to go with your vibe and preferred style.

Humidify Your Home

Invest in a humidifier for your home, to help you maintain proper indoor humidity levels, as the dry indoor air from heaters can lead to your hair drying out, and breakage. Maintaining a proper indoor humidity level can also help to keep your hair and skin moisturized, healthy, and glowing!

Avoid Hot Water

When washing your hair, use lukewarm water instead of hot water. Hot water can strip your hair of natural oils, leaving it dry and frizzy. Remember that everyone's hair is unique, so it may take some trial and error to find the products and routines that work best for you. Be patient and consistent in your approach to maintain healthy and beautiful hair during the fall and winter months.

Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Balanced Diet

Drink enough water to keep your body and hair properly hydrated. You can do the “Skin Pinch Test” on your hand to determine if your body is currently in need of more hydration. It’s also generally recommended to consume a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats to support your best genetic hair health.
