Aloe Vera for Natural Hair
For centuries, aloe vera has been globally considered a miracle plant because of its benefits in treating various health conditions. Also called the “lily of the desert,” aloe vera is definitely a “super plant,” containing more than 20 minerals, 18 amino acids and 12 vitamins. This natural wonder fits perfectly into natural hair care, from cleansing and conditioning to styling. Here are a few uses for aloe vera:

As a Moisturizer
Aloe vera is similar to keratin in makeup. Keratin is the primary protein of hair and is loaded with amino acids. Aloe vera – rich in vitamins C, E and beta carotene – contains seven of the eight essential amino acids that our body requires. Two ingredients that enhance aloe vera moisturizing capacity are lignins, a fiber which enhances aloe vera’s ability to penetrate the hair, and mucopolysaccharides which help in binding moisture to the hair. Like keratin, it can combat frizz and maintain your natural texture without the threat of the damage actual keratin may cause. Mix aloe with water for a daily moisturizer that can be used on natural hair; combine two-thirds water to one-third aloe. 

To Combat and Soothe a Dry, Itchy Scalp
Aloe vera has proteolytic enzymes, which breakdown and remove dead skin cells from the scalp, reduce dandruff and prevent scalp itching. It can also balance the pH of the scalp.

Applying aloe vera gel to your scalp followed by your favorite oil on your tresses adds maximum moisture before shampooing. Be sure to massage the aloe vera gel into your scalp and, whenever possible, opt for fresh aloe vera.

Leave-in Conditioner
Aloe vera is water soluble and makes an excellent leave-in conditioner. It is not heavy and won’t create build up on the hair. If you use the LOC method (Leave-in, Oil and Cream), try replacing the “L” in this method with aloe vera! Because aloe vera gel is more than 90 percent water, it is an ideal leave-in.
